TAMPA, Florida. – The Tampa Convention Center has become a pet lover’s paradise as the American Kennel Club hosts “Meet the Breeds” this weekend.
Over 70 different pooches, from puppies to juniors and grown adults, will be in attendance at the educational event.
“We don’t do adoptions. We don’t do purchases. But we do a lot of education and that’s what we really want people to do, to be responsible dog owners, to know what you have. and knowing how to own them,” explained Brandi Munden of the American Kennel Club.
Events like this help potential dog owners learn more about all the different breeds before adding a furious four-legged addition to the family; whether you are looking for a thoroughbred or a rescue.

“What we want is for you to know what is going on in owning this dog, what is their energy level, what are the groomer requirements, what do they need for mental stimulation and how do they fit into your lifestyle,” Munden said. “So we want to make sure you get the right dog so that you have a long, happy and healthy life with your dog.”
Munden says the AKC is trying to incorporate local kennel clubs into all markets the event travels to, so guests will speak with Tampa experts as they meet and greet the different breeds while traveling from booth on stand.
“You’ll see dogs, you’ll scratch ears, you’ll rub bellies, you’ll talk to experts, and then you’ll move on to the next one,” Munden explained.
The fluid event also features demonstrations of agility and obedience. Additionally, the Sarasota K-9 Search and Rescue team will be on hand to show customers what the working dogs do.
This is the first time the event has been held in Tampa. It’s open Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
