INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Each week, Pet Pals TV shares a fun, interesting and informative story about our population of four-legged and furry friends.
This week, ‘Pet Pals TV’ host Patty Spitler was joined by adoptive dog mom Megan Caccio and pet mom Jenni Bass, who shared the story of Betty, a puppy suffering from rickets.
Rickets is a rare disease in young animals, including dogs, that causes soft, misshapen bones. It is triggered by a diet low in phosphorus or vitamin D, but can also be caused by a calcium deficiency. The cause of rickets is usually an imbalance in the calcium to phosphorus ratio in the diet, according to Dr. Walter Grünberg.
When Caccio met Betty, the puppy was not walking properly.
“I thought it was impossible for her to walk normally,” Caccio said. “She was walking on her elbows, and when I first brought her home, my husband was like, ‘Did you bring an alien home? There’s no way.’ And I said, ‘I know. We have to have faith.
After welcoming Betty, Caccio reached out to her friend, Jenni Bass, sending her updates on Betty’s progress.
“I didn’t realize [that] just good nutrition and love could get her to where she is now, in just a few weeks,” Bass said.
“Pet Pals TV” airs in Indianapolis at 8:30 a.m. Saturday on MyINDY-TV 23 and 10:30 a.m. Saturday on WISH-TV and WHMB-TV. The show is also broadcast on other US stationsincluding those in Fort Wayne, Lafayette, Terre Haute and Louisville, Kentucky.
