MetLife Pet Insurance Review 2022 – Forbes Advisor

Trupanion pet insurance has a 5-day waiting period for accidents and a 30-day waiting period for illness. If you are a pet owner in Florida, Trupanion has a 12-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses. MetLife has a 14-day waiting period for illness and accident coverage begins on the effective date of your policy.

Trupanion does not have an extended waiting period for conditions such as cruciate ligament issues while MetLife has a 6 month waiting period for cruciate ligament issues and intervertebral disc disease for policies underwritten by the AIIC.

Trupanion pays your vet directly if your vet has their software. MetLife does not offer the option to pay your veterinarian directly and you will need to file a claim, which is usually paid in 10 days or less.

MetLife offers the option of adding a wellness plan to your policy while Trupanion does not. MetLife also covers veterinary exam costs for accidents and illnesses, unlike Trupanion. MetLife and Trupanion both cover dental conditions, but with Trupanion your pet must have an annual dental exam, while MetLife does not require a dental exam.
