5:30 p.m., 500 block driveway on Main Street
The Downtown Evansville Economic Improvement District (EID) is hosting a celebration for their newest year-round lighting and decorating installation in the aisle between 512 Main and 518 Main.
The inaugural decor scheme celebrates Cinco de Mayo and will include dozens of colorful papel picado as well as two giant papel picado photo props, according to an EID release.
“Papel picado is a traditional Mexican folk art,” said Abraham Brown, director of the Evansville Latino Center. “Usually made from stacks of tissue paper, you’ll find them hung in the back alleys and streets of Mexico at holiday celebrations, quinceañeras, weddings, and other events like Cinco de Mayo.”
The celebration will include performances coordinated by the Evansville Latino Center, including singer Mariachi Georgina Lopez Álvarez, the Latin American folk dance group, and Sophie Radionova and Olga Radionova from the Signature School.
“We are excited to present these Latinx performers as a way to showcase our new lighting installation, which will draw people into space and provide additional safety in the alley,” said Josh Armstrong, President of EID .
The papel picado installation will be in place until June 14, when it will be replaced by an exhibit of American flags and patriotic bunting. Armstrong said the decor will be replaced with other seasonal and holiday decors.
