The 27-year-old Dutch man said he killed the bird because he believed his pregnant girlfriend was cheating on him.
NEDERLAND, Texas – A 27-year-old Dutchman will be fined $ 500 and spent five years on probation after pleading guilty to animal cruelty.
Hernan Hernandez is accused of beheading a bird after police say he assaulted his pregnant girlfriend. The charge he faced for the alleged assault has been dropped.

This happened on Friday December 18, 2020. Officers were dispatched to the 2900 block of Nederland Avenue in Nederland shortly after 7:30 am, in response to an assault on a pregnant woman.
Hernandez’s girlfriend, who was five months pregnant at the time, told officers who responded that Hernandez assaulted her after killing her mother’s pet bird.
Hernandez showed the young women the dead bird in the trash. He then took the bird out of the trash, ripped its head off its body and threw it at the victim, court documents show.
Officers found the dead bird in the toilet. The victim said Hernandez killed the bird because he was mad.

Extract from an affidavit of probable cause:
On 12/18/20 at around 7:31 a.m., the officer a. Bell, with the Dutch Police Department, was dispatched to 2900 Nederland avenue # 513, Nederland, Jefferson County, TX in response to an assault on a pregnant woman. Involving domestic violence. The complainant, who is 5 months pregnant, said her boyfriend, Hernan Cortez Hernandez, assaulted her around 11:45 a.m. on 12/17/20. [The victim] also informed officer bell Hernan that he had killed his mother’s bird prior to the assault. Hernan had initially shown him the dead bird in the trash. Hernan later removed the bird from the trash, ripped the bird’s head from its body, and threw it at her. Hernan then threw the bird down the toilet where Officer Bell found it. She said Hernan killed the bird because he was mad.
