12-year-old plays the violin in Falmouth to help his family pay their rent

When I walked into Falmouth Shaw I saw the craziest thing.

First I heard music. Then when I saw a child playing the violin. Then I saw the sign.

I wanted to donate immediately but I had no money. I spoke with the family and asked if they had Venmo, but they only had Cash App. Well, I’m lucky. This Shaw’s is on Route One in Falmouth. This one-mile stretch of road happens to be houses 10 different banks! So, I went for $20 to donate to the cause.

I spoke to the father and asked where he lives. He said just outside Pittsburgh. They were going home. The four children were there, with the mother. While I was there, at least 3 people donated. I asked if it was okay to make a video of the game, and the father said yes.

I assumed this boy was around 15 years old. That’s when the father told me he was 12! 12? Yes, it is very big.

I was trying to be sensitive to their situation and not prying, but I had so many questions. Why were they in Falmouth if they live outside Pittsburgh? How long has this child been playing the violin? How did they get home?

But I didn’t ask. I just gave them $20, made a quick video and I was on my way. They all seemed so nice. Both father and son had good eyes. The younger ones seemed very happy. Mom seemed wary of strangers around her.

I wished them luck, thanked them for the music on a hot day, and left. The last thing father said to me was,

God bless you.

Hope they get where they were going.
